Cittaslow USA is the umbrella organization for the Cittaslow movement in the United States. The Movement of cittaslow was born in 1999, thanks to Paolo Saturnini’s brilliant intuition. Mr. Saturini is the past Mayor of Greve in Chianti, a little town of Tuscany.

The new idea of considering the ‘town’ itself, and thinking of a different way of development based on improving quality of life, moved Mr. Saturini to spread his thoughts all over Italy. His ideals were quickly endorsed by the Mayors of Bra (Francesco Guida), Orvieto ( Stefano Cimicchi) and Positano (Domenico Marrone ). The growing movement also received support from Carlo Petrini, president of Slow Food.

The main goal of cittaslow is to spread the philosophy of Slow Food into local communities and to the governments of towns, advocating for the concepts of eco-gastronomy in everyday life.

Municipalities that join Cittaslow are motivated by people who are curious about a time past, where man is still protagonist of the slow and healthy succession of seasons, respectful of citizens health, and attracted to the authenticity of products and good food… a time ago rich in the fascinating traditions of art, squares, theaters, shops, cafes, restaurants, places of the spirit and unspoiled landscapes, characterized by spontaneity, religious rites, respect for traditions, and life enhanced by the joy of slow and quiet living.
